How is PSG shaping up for this season?
PSG finished the 2025-26 season as one of the most successful teams in the club’s history. They won a fifth straight Ligue 1 title with a game to spare and kept hold of the Champions League after beating Arsenal in Budapest.
Their run to that trophy wasn’t easy though. Luis Enrique’s side only just scraped through the group stage in 11th place, then had to beat Monaco 5-4 on aggregate just to reach the knockouts.
Once they got going, PSG were unstoppable. They beat Chelsea 8-2 and Liverpool 4-0 across two legs on the way to the final.

Pre-season hasn’t gone smoothly for them though. A young PSG team lost 3-0 at Mallorca while most of their World Cup players were still away. PSG have no fresh injuries, but Fabian Ruiz and Achraf Hakimi are doubts after coming back late from the World Cup.
With Goncalo Ramos sold to AC Milan, PSG have no recognised number nine, however Kvaratskhelia, Dembele and Doue in attack with Vitinha and Neves in midfield is one of the best squad you can find in the world.
How does Aston Villa look before this season?
Aston Villa had their best season under Unai Emery last year. They finished fourth in the Premier League and won the Europa League, beating Freiburg 3-0 in the final.
It was their first big European trophy in 44 years, and the club now wants to compete seriously in the Champions League. Over the summer they sold two important players, Morgan Rogers to Chelsea and Youri Tielemans to Manchester United.
In their place, Villa brought in young players like Johan Manzambi who performed well for Switzerland in the World Cup and Joao Gomes to freshen up the squad. Aston Villa are missing Amadou Onana, who tore his ACL on international duty and will be out for around nine months. Boubacar Kamara is closer to fitness but probably won’t be fully ready for this game.
These two teams have only played each other twice before, both in last season’s Champions League quarter-final, and both games had plenty of goals. PSG won the first leg 3-1 at home, then Villa won the return leg 3-2 at Villa Park, but PSG still went through 5-4 on aggregate.
What can we expect from PSG vs Aston Villa?
Both teams know how big this game is, but neither one is at full strength right now. PSG’s World Cup players are still getting back to full fitness, and Villa are still settling in their new signings.
Bookmakers have PSG as favourites, which makes sense given their squad depth and recent success. But Villa have hurt PSG before, and they still have enough quality up front to cause problems.
We think goals will come at both ends. PSG have no recognised striker after selling Goncalo Ramos, but Kvaratskhelia, Dembele and Doue give them more than enough firepower to score. Villa’s defence is still adjusting after losing Onana to injury and selling two key players, and PSG have shown before they can punish teams in transition.
Villa aren’t just there to defend though. Ollie Watkins and Alejandro Garnacho give them a real threat on the counter, and the last time these two sides met, Villa scored four goals over two legs against this same PSG core.
Villa therefore have their own issues to correct, but PSG’s preparation has hardly been straightforward either. French reports previously indicated that players involved in the latter stages of the tournament would receive their mandatory summer break before returning, leaving PSG with limited preparation time ahead of the Super Cup. Wednesday’s meeting will be the first competitive fixture for both teams.
The over 2.5 goals market is worth a look too, but since this is a one-off final rather than a two-legged tie, both teams to score feels like the safer way to play it.
