Scotland come into this decider on the back of a wild 3-2 defeat in Greece, a result that exposed defensive frailties but again underlined their attacking threat through Ben Gannon-Doak and Ryan Christie.

Before that, Steve Clarke’s men had put together four straight wins in qualifying after an opening 0-0 in Copenhagen, including home victories over Belarus and Greece and a controlled 2-0 success away to Belarus.

Denmark let automatic qualification slip at the weekend when a 2-2 draw with Belarus in Copenhagen turned what should have been a straightforward campaign into a nerve-shredding finale.

Even so, Brian Riemer’s side remain top of Group C with 11 points to Scotland’s 10 and boast a goal difference of +11 after heavy wins over Greece and Belarus earlier in the group.

Four of their last five qualifiers have cleared the 2.5 goal line, with Damsgaard, Isaksen and Christian Eriksen consistently creating chances, while only the goalless opener against Scotland failed to produce multiple goals.

Hampden Park should be at full volume with Scotland needing all three points, and that game state naturally points towards an open contest once the hosts start to push.

Their last two qualifiers have finished 3-1 and 3-2, and with Denmark needing only a draw, the visitors are well set to exploit space on the counter through their pacey forwards if Scotland’s back line continues to wobble.

Add in Denmark’s recent sickness issues around key figures like Rasmus Højlund and Joachim Andersen, plus their poor recent record at Hampden where Scotland have won the last three meetings, and the balance looks set for a tense, end-to-end match where both teams find the net and the door remains wide open for a third goal.
