Advice 1: Mathematical understanding
You find your edge by analyzing statistics and nothing else. Put as much time as possible, use modern tools and know that beating bookies in big leagues takes much more. As the sport itself does not matter to you so much, try to find the one where you can find the biggest amount ofwrong lines. But as soon as you find one, try to grow and increase your profit by following other aspects of the game itself.
Advice 2: Know your sport better than bookies do
For example you know basketball very well. You can guess what losing a player means for a team better than bookmakers. You know which opponents match better or worse, what type of tempo will be played and which players have extra motivation at times. Your main mission is to keep learning, keep following games, gather as much fresh information as you can find. Other than that, you should increase your knowledge in other aspects of sports betting to a certain level. That will help to find value easier and understand where and why the line is wrong.
Advice 3: Inside info
I won’t go deep into this topic, as we all understand getting exclusive information from inside is only available for very few people in betting nowadays. But if you do, keep in mind that you still have to stick to money management rules and not to overestimate your edge.
Advice 4: Smaller leagues
Big leagues and sports gather most audience, most money etc. The same goes with bookmakers, the bigger the game, the more work will be put into it. And it’s not a coincidence that biggest leagues have biggest limits – it’s because these lines were made taking multiple factors into account, made by many bookmakers together – in short, they are much more polished and much harder to beat in a long run. That is why your best bet is finding a smaller league, where you can put all your work to and therefore have an edge against bookmaker lines.
Advice 5: Look for bets against big names
Your bets should never be based on team name and you should forget “they will win, because they should be a better team”. Sometimes favourites are favoured too much only based on their name or the fact that their fans put more money on their team. Be more careful betting on “big name” teams, but also understand – you can find value here too, it’s just more rare and harder to find the right spot.
Advice 6: Look for money movement
Simply put, money movement means line changes. You should give extra efforts to understand what are these based on and search where you can use money/line movement to gain extra advantage. For example, line movement to the favourited side, could simply mean “public bet” on Madrid Real against Sevilla FC, thus making bets on Sevilla a value pick.
