Three years running now these two have met in New York, and Sabalenka has won the previous two, including the 2024 final and the semi-final a year after that. At some point a pattern like that stops being coincidence. Pegula plays clean, flat, low margin tennis and she does it very well, but Sabalenka is one of the handful of players on tour who can simply out hit that style on a quick hard court.
Neither of them got here comfortably. Sabalenka needed three sets and two tiebreaks to see off Linda Noskova, coming through 7-6 3-6 7-6, while Pegula went the distance against Emma Navarro. So freshness is not the separator here. What is, is that Sabalenka has been the more assured player in the closing rounds of this tournament for several seasons and she has the bigger weapons when the rallies get short.
The crowd on Ashe will be loudly behind the American, and that is really the reason this price is as generous as it is. Fair enough, home support is worth something in a semi-final. It is not worth enough to make the world number one this close to a coin flip.
