La Liga Prediction and Best Bet: Elche vs Barcelona (2026-08-23)

History leaves little doubt here. Barcelona have won each of the last four meetings between these sides by two goals or more, including back to back 3-1 wins last season. Elche haven’t beaten Barcelona since 1974, a drought stretching back over five decades.

The champions also scored 95 league goals last season, eighteen more than any other team in Spain. Flick has added serious firepower too, bringing in Rodri, Anthony Gordon and Karim Adeyemi over the summer.

Goals have flowed in recent meetings between these two clubs. Both teams scored in each of the last two head to head matches, both finishing 3-1 to Barcelona. Elche’s new setup under Anselmi showed attacking intent against Deportivo, with Marc Aguado’s second half strike cancelling out Aubameyang’s opener.

Flick’s high defensive line, a trait he carried over from Bayern Munich and Germany, tends to hold firm in La Liga even when it wobbles in Europe. That aggressive setup lets Barcelona to score more but opens up defensive gaps which Elche side can exploit at home and score at least once.

Karim Adeyemi looks like the man in form heading into this trip. He scored and set up another in pre-season against Basel, and reports suggest he’s now ahead of Gordon for a starting spot on the left. Facing Elche’s wing backs one on one should give him space to work with all afternoon.

Lamine Yamal, Fermin Lopez and Raphinha of course are the main goal threats for Elche and are all expected to start and capable of unlocking a deep Elche block even in tight spaces. Teenager Hamza Abdelkarim has also impressed in pre-season, scoring in the win over Basel and showing he can contribute even in a squad packed with attacking talent.

Barcelona’s squad still carries more than enough quality to break down a limited Elche side, even without De Jong and a doubtful Rodri.
