Two players separated by five places in the rankings, and the market has still made a clear favourite. Shapovalov sits at number 50 and is seeded seventh here, Griekspoor is at 55, so on paper this is close to a coin flip. The reasons to side with the Canadian go beyond the seeding.
They have met twice. Griekspoor took the first one in Geneva in 2024 on clay, and Shapovalov answered in Munich earlier this season. The surface matters in that split: Chengdu is a quick outdoor hard court, which is the setting where the Shapovalov serve and the flat backhand do the most damage, and it is the surface on which Griekspoor has the smaller margin for error against big hitters.
There is also a small sentimental note that happens to be a real one. Shapovalov made the semifinals in Chengdu back in 2019 and has not been back since, so he arrives at a venue that suits him with no recent baggage attached to it.
