Belgium are the reigning European champions and the better side on paper, so nobody is arguing with them being favourites for a place in the last four. The argument is with the size of the number. Five and a half points, in a World Cup quarter-final, against the host nation, in front of a full home crowd, is a lot to give away.
Germany earned this tie the hard way and did it convincingly, routing South Korea to book their spot in the quarter-finals. Marie Gulich has led them well from the front and this team has grown into the tournament rather than faded out of it. Playing in Berlin has clearly lifted them, and home advantage in a knockout game is exactly the sort of edge that turns a seven point gap into a two or three point one.
Belgium will most likely still win this. That is fine, because the bet does not need them to lose. It needs the game to stay competitive into the fourth quarter, which is how most quarter-finals between two decent European sides tend to play out.
