His experience in changing conditions is hard to match. Ferrari have found real form at just the right time.

Russell is the quiet story of this title fight. He sits just 25 points back, in the same car as the championship leader. He also has none of Antonelli’s recent reliability trouble. McLaren, meanwhile, look off the pace they had here last year. Norris and defending winner Oscar Piastri are both outside the front-running talk this time. If Mercedes’ pace holds up in whatever weather Spa brings, Russell looks best placed to turn it into a win, not just a podium. A podium alone won’t close the gap at the top. Mercedes will want both cars scoring big points this weekend. A win would also quiet any doubts about his pace.

Mercedes still look like the fastest team on paper. But Spa has a habit of punishing the safest-looking pick, and Antonelli already learned that at Silverstone. I’ll take Hamilton’s history at this track, plus Ferrari’s current form, over a Mercedes team that has shown it can still go wrong. Lewis Hamilton to win @4.50 is the best bet of the weekend. Antonelli is the each-way cover if the favourites just play it straight. Lights out is Sunday afternoon at Spa. Fans should expect a weekend full of twists. Spa always finds a way to surprise.
