Tranmere v Tottenham Preview and Prediction

On Friday night, Tranmere Rovers host Tottenham in the first of the FA Cup third round ties being played this weekend.

The home side returned to League Two this season after promotion from the National League in the previous campaign. Tottenham are a world away from their Merseyside opponents, as they are currently third place in the Premier League table.

Tranmere have made a solid start to life back in league football. Rovers are currently mounting a challenge for the League Two play-offs. Mickey Mellon’s side has endured mixed fortunes of late, but have lost just once in five games in all competitions.

The home side has already seen off Oxford City and Merseyside rivals Southport in the previous rounds. Spurs offer a far bigger challenge though.

Tottenham will be looking to end their search for silverware this season, with the FA Cup a highly winnable trophy. The north London side made it to the semi-finals of the competition last season, only to suffer a 2-1 defeat at Wembley against Manchester United.

The loss against the Red Devils is Spurs only defeat in seven games in the FA Cup. Tottenham also scored at least two goals in their previous four games in the competition prior to the defeat against United.
